Calendar – 2007

The Kenilworth Chess Club meets every Thursday night starting by 8:00 p.m. in the Recreation Building at 575 Kenilworth Boulevard. We welcome all chessplayers to attend even if they are not going to participate in the evening’s main event. We usually have a skittles and discussion room available when more serious chess is being played in the main hall. Highlights of the year include the Club Championship tournament running through March and the Holiday Party in late December. See the 2005 Calendar and 2006 Calendar for details about past years. Other events may be added to open dates, including team matches or rated events (TBA or “to be announced”).

As with 2006, this year it will be broken into two sections, an Open section with players vying for the championship and an Under-1800 section with players vying for the Under-1800 title. The format will also be the same as last year’s event: a time control of Game-90, with 5-second-delay upon request. Trophies for Club Champion, second place, and third place, Under-1800, and Under-1500. The event will be Unrated. Entry Fee: $25, plus a $10 deposit toward excessive byes. Club membership ($15) required. Bye Policy: Two free byes. After the two free byes, players forfeit their $10 deposit for an additional bye. Four byes results in forfeit. May 10 FIVE MINUTE TOURNAMENT. $5 Entry fee. All money returned as prizes. This one is for real! Additional funds to sweeten the pot! Light refreshments.

May 17CONSULTATION GAME – Day One. Last year’s Consultation Game was such a hit that we are bringing it back early. Two teams meeting in separate rooms take each other on in a game at 5 minutes per move. Teams vote on their choice of move, but team captains make the final call. Check out blog entries on last year’s event to see how it works: Adjourned KCC Consultation Game and KCC Consultation Game Concludes — and the java replay of the game itself. It was originally conceived on the model of the 2005 Polgar-Nakamura Exhibition Match, with two masters challenging each other in separate rooms, discussing their strategies to the audience present and answering questions about their thinking during the game. But it quickly turned into a team match, and that seems the best model for this year. Light refreshments.

May 24 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY NIGHT and CONSULTATION GAME Day Two. The consultation game concludes. Awards presentation for the club championship.

May 31 THEMATIC TOURNAMENT – theme to be announced at least one week in advance (see The Kenilworthian or The Chess Coroner for details). Four rounds at Game-15. Entry fee $5 — all money returned as prizes. Starts promptly at 8:30 pm with rounds ASAP thereafter. Last year’s tournament (see details here and here) was enjoyed by six participants.
